Huawei Launches the World’s First 8-Antenna 4.5G Modem Chipset

On February 26, Huawei launched the world’s first 8-antenna 4.5G modem chipset Balong 765 and demonstrated its innovations in the application of mobile connectivity and Internet of Vehicles (IoV) for vertical sectors at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018. As wireless network architecture evolves from 4G to 5G, Balong 765 provides reliable connectivity solutions and it reshapes the lifestyle.

Balong 765 has world’s leading communication connectivity capabilities and it can improve the utilization efficiency of operators’ spectrum resources, by bringing ultra-fast communication experiences to end users, and providing highly integrated and high-reliability chip solutions for IoV. It is the world’s first chipset to support LTE Cat.19 with downlink data-rate up to 1.6Gbps in FDD network and up to 1.16Gbps in the TD-LTE network. Balong 765 is also the world’s first Gigabit TD-LTE solution. It is the world’s first and industry’s only modem chipset to support 8×8 MIMO (8-antenna multiple-input and multiple-output) technology with industry-leading performance in network speed and signal intensity to achieve 80% improvement over 4×4 MIMO in spectral efficiency. With LTE-V technology support Balong 765 provides a more secure and reliable wireless connection on the IoV-enabled vehicles.

Maximum utilization of operators’ spectrum resources by the world’s first modem with 8×8 MIMO technology

Mobile communication has become an indispensable part of modern daily life. Real-time, reliable connection to keep online is essential to both work and to life. With the development of new services such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and ultra-high-definition (UHD) 4G streaming videos in the coming years, users will have an exponentially increasing demand for network speed and capacity that brings in new business opportunities to operators. However, the scarcity of spectrum resources has always been the biggest challenge to operators worldwide. Improving utilization of spectrum resources and providing consumers with higher-quality experiences with limited spectrum resources is the common objective to all operators.

To overcome this challenge in the existing network environment, the Balong R&D team draws upon Huawei’s strengths in 4.5G by upgrading communication specifications with innovative methods, making Balong 765 chipset the world’s first commercial chipset to support LTE Cat.19 with a download rate up to 1.6Gbps in FDD network and up to 1.16Gbps in the TD-LTE network, achieving a substantial improvement in symbol rate and providing faster network speed for the global users. Balong 765 is the world’s first communication chipset solution that achieves 1Gbps speed in a TD-LTE network. The TD-LTE operators can provide wireless subscribers an incredible network access experiences based on Balong 765 as they never had before.

With its powerful wireless signal receiver, Balong 765 provides ultra-fast communication experiences featuring higher speed and more reliable connectivity. Balong 765 is the world’s first 4.5G LTE-Adv. PRO chipset to support 8×8 MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) technology, which provides up to 80% improvement in spectrum efficiency compared with 4×4 MIMO. It means that with the same spectrum resources, 8×8 MIMO can help operators increase their network capacity, secure their existing spectrum investment by gaining a better return on investment (ROI). Thanks to the 8-antenna technology, Balong 765 based devices can have stronger and more reliable wireless signal reception, and users can enjoy a higher downlink throughput under a wider range of wireless network coverage.

Balong 765 is the world’s first 8-antenna 4.5G modem chip. The 8-antenna technology makes the traditional eMMB business to achieve a peak downlink data-rate of 1.6Gbps with the least spectrum by using only 2 carriers to meet with the LTE Cat.19 standard. This technology can provide high-quality communication coverage with 9-10 more dBs over traditional phones and it offers network optimization to the existing network using 2x2 MIMO. With a coverage improvement brought by the 8-antenna technology, Balong 765 enables new vertical sectors especially IoV, UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), and smart factory applications.

1. IoV Balong 765 can significantly increase the signal of IoV, solving the signal loss issues in basement garage. With 10dB signal improvement Balong 765 makes the high-speed wireless connectivity much more reliable. 2. UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) Most network planning was not optimized specifically for UAVs, hence there could be many coverage holes to those UAVs flying at a low altitude. The 10dB signal improvement provided by Balong 765 can substantially reduce the occurrence of such insufficiency. 3. Smart Factory Traditional smart factories, which do not have eMBB servers, mostly have a lower signal coverage. Gaining 10dB improvement Balong 765 can make a tremendous difference to signal coverage in smart factories.

Leading LTE-V based IoV solutions

Driven by constant breakthroughs in communication technologies, the era of universal connectivity with its myriad smart life, smart city, and smart transport applications will become a reality. Operators can enable closer integration of industries and sectors through connection and data services, thereby changes the world with these mobile technologies. However, before the commercialization of 5G NR on a large scale, it is necessary for the LTE network to continue evolving in order to maximize the utilization of the existing network. This is the core value proposition of the 4.5G technology in the current stage. The 4.5G wireless communication technology allows operators to make deployments on their existing networks and that better serves the vertical markets by leveraging their own advantages.

Among many other applications, IoV is one of the core 4.5G application scenarios. As IoV development is currently constrained by communications technology, in order to support the normal operation of all types of applications in the IoV ecosystem, a technology breakthrough with lower latency, higher reliability, better signal coverage, and higher bandwidth than the existing communication technology would be needed.

Balong 765 comes as an effective solution to this challenge. It is the world’s first highly-integrated single chip that supports LTE-V and other systems including GSM, UMTS, TD-SCDMA, TD-LTE and FDD-LTE for IoV. The multi-antenna technology of 8×8 MIMO, which’s ideal in latency reduction, can also enable a more secure and reliable connectivity for the IoV applications.

Among the systems, LTE-V is the latest IoV solution launched under the 3GPP telecommunication standard and 4G based evolution technology oriented to smart transport and IoV applications, including connections between vehicle and vehicle (V2V), between vehicle and traffic infrastructure, and between vehicle and people (V2X). These connections will significantly enhance the safety and efficiency in transportation. LTE-V has two air interfaces — PC5 and UU, where PC5 is for vehicle-to-vehicle communication; and UU is for vehicle-to-network communication. With its multi-system capability Balong 765 can support PC5 and UU interfaces simultaneously, for enhanced vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-network connections, making vehicles an important element of the future world with universal connectivity.

Paving the way for 5G on the basis of operators’ existing investment, 4.5G has been an inevitable path helping operators achieve improved mobile broadband capability, massive connections of cellular IoT, and ultra-low-latency industry applications. Balong 765 is expected to maximize its strengths in communication technologies delivering unlimited possibilities with universal connectivity in the near future.

Commercial devices equipped with Balong 765 chipset will be generally available in the third quarter of year 2018.
