Huawei Launches AI Development Platform HiKey 970
Huawei launched its world-leading AI development platform HiKey 970 at Linaro Connect Hong Kong 2018 on March 19. Based on Kirin 970, the world’s first AI mobile computing platform integrated with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), HiKey 970 will provide developers with an open-source development board featuring powerful AI capabilities, hardware acceleration and outstanding performance, and unite more developers to create a better future for mobile AI applications.
HiKey 970 is an AI-friendly development platform that integrates Huawei’s innovative HiAI computing architecture and popular neural network frameworks. Besides CPU and GPU AI operations, it supports NPU neural network computing hardware acceleration, enabling easier and more efficient AI development in robots, smart cities and deep learning algorithms and turning smart life into reality.
From a leading AI development platform to an AI ecosystem
As AI technology gains traction, the industry's discussion on AI applications has never stopped, how will AI change the society and what breakthrough experience can AI bring to us are becoming the focus of industry. As a leader of on-device AI, Huawei launched the world’s first AI-enabled processor Kirin 970 in 2017, which has brought users all-new experiences, such as AI Camera and AI Translator, started the beginning of AI mobile phones.
After the breakthrough achieved in mobile AI computing performance, there will ensue a massive demand for all-new experiences based on AI apps. To work with more developers for AI apps, Huawei has launched the world-leading AI development platform, HiKey 970, which based on the Kirin 970, supports the HiAI mobile computing architecture with a dedicated NPU for AI acceleration. Compared to CPU-based AI, HiKey 970 is approximately 50 times more energy efficient and 25 times faster, thanks to its powerful AI capabilities, hardware acceleration and stronger performance. This board will enable developers to come up with all-new apps offering incredible experiences.
HiKey 970 is the third generation development board rolled out by Huawei. Compared to the previous two generations, it learned a lot of from developers on hardware and software. It has greater computing power and richer hardware interfaces and supports mainstream operating systems and AI stacks. It integrates Huawei’s HiAI framework and other mainstream neural network frameworks, supporting NPU neural network computing hardware acceleration as well as CPU and GPU AI operations, which can greatly help on-device AI development.
Enable developers to deliver on-device AI value
The building of an AI ecosystem cannot be achieved without the innovation of the entire industry, and the efforts of developers as well as the experience and feedback of users.
For most AI application developers, the cost, distribution and promotion, as well as IP issues are the most important, HiKey 970 provides features as multi-application model, support for machine learning frameworks, comprehensive documentation, rich and efficient APIs, and easy-to-master source codes, allowing them to appreciate the enormous potential of on-device AI more directly and deliver AI application value more quickly.
Under the efforts of entire industry, including developers, user and Hikey 970, on-device AI will release its amazing power in the near future and bring more smart experiences to users. As a core member of the Linaro 96Boards, the HiKey series of development boards will continue to come up with increased performance, providing developers with more powerful and convenient development tools.
“We hope to bring an easy and powerful AI development platform to developers,” said Eric Zhou, Product Marketing Director of Huawei Wireless Terminal Chipset, “Thanks to our partners Linaro, ARM, Hoperun and LeMaker, and all our development engineers and marketers. Together we have accomplished this highly challenging task.”
HiKey 970 will be open to developers for sale soon, helping them to create AI apps that open up new worlds for users.
