HiSilicon's Hi-Air Sets a New Standard for Screen Latency

[Shanghai, China, August 3, 2021] We're constantly surrounded by screens, whether it's the television in the living room, automotive head unit in the car, projector in the conference room, or smartphone in our pocket. And while the phone screen is what we spend the most time looking at, there are also times when it's convenient to project content from your phone to another screen. That's where an ultra-low latency projection host can make all the difference in the world.

HiSilicon Chipset:
Pushing the Envelope for Seamless Screen Projection

HD, 4K UHD, and 8K UHD solutions bolstered by HiSilicon chipsets include the following features:

HiSilicon chipset pushing the envelope for seamless screen projection
  • Lower latency: HiSilicon's Hi-Air image transmission technology is set to serve as the industry benchmark for ultra-low latency over the next three years. When combined with Huawei Cast+, which supports automatic device discovery and simple connectivity, Hi-Air is capable of dramatically streamlining the overall projection and control experience.
  • In-depth protocol optimization: Incorporation of more protocols – Cast+, DLNA, Miracast, Lelink, as well as others – results in broad compatibility.
  • Low-memory design: A low memory footprint and high scalability facilitate effortless integration into devices.
  • Soaring energy efficiency: Only a TV USB power supply is required, and the surface temperature never exceeds 40°C, even after the device has been operating for an extended period of time.
  • UHD picture quality: Picture quality outperforms industry norms, with broad compatibility for all streaming media formats.

HiSilicon's technology enables you to weave seamlessly from device to device, resulting in the seamless, unobstructed flow of content and services between smart devices of all different shapes and sizes.

HiSilicon & HappyCast:
Superior Hardware Meets Refined Software

HappyCast, a projection service provided by Lebo, harnesses HiSilicon's high-performance 64-bit quad-core Cortex-A53 processor, multi-core GPU Mali-450, 2.4 GHz/5 GHz band, and 802.11b/g/n/ac 2x2 antennas. These superior hardware specs ensure that HappyCast stands out from the competition in the smart TV network and computing performance services space, in terms of video projection capabilities and diversity of application scenarios.

Thanks largely to Lebo's eight years of experience in the projection field, HappyCast comes with three headline features: Fast connectivity, low latency, and zero frame freezing.

Fast connectivity means that your phone can connect to the projection screen in the blink of an eye, and in a number of different approaches: via QR code scanning, NFC (if available on the phone), software, (cross-network) mirroring, and more. This high degree of convenience is further bolstered by its compatibility with a wide array of projection protocols, including Lelink and DLNA.

Lebo's dedicated 5 GHz projection network facilitates stable, high-speed channels for wireless network transmission. Even when there is no broadband WiFi connection, you'll still be able to switch to the 5 GHz network simply by scanning a QR code, and enjoy a stellar projection experience.

Low latency: By capitalizing on computing and network expertise, Lebo and HiSilicon have fully adapted dedicated decoding channels, which are capable of delivering ultra-low latency of as little as 40 ms. You'll notice that projection is stutter-free, regardless of whether you're gaming, live streaming, or working, and without the lag or slow buffering commonly seen in traditional projection methods.

Zero frame freezing ensures HD imagery and buttery smooth visuals during projection. This may seem easy when a projection app is used, but it can be a significant challenge when it comes to screen mirroring, which places high demands on performance, the network, and software optimization. HappyCast has excelled in every respect. In addition, its low memory footprint minimizes overheating and phone battery drain.

While the computing power continues to soar, and the way in which we consume content has shifted dramatically, mobile is dominating the content consumption landscape. Projection services allow for a wide range of mobile apps to be extended to larger external screens, such as a TV, head unit, or projector, resulting in a vastly superior viewing experience. However, in practice, poor picture quality, high latency, and inconvenient operations have turned consumers off from phone-based projection. Many have opted to continue watching most content on the phone, even though this undermines the viewing experience.

Lebo has released its HappyCast service with the goal of resolving these pain points, and has drawn acclaim for its superior projection experience.

With HappyCast,
the TV Is Once Again the Entertainment Hub

HappyCast has helped the TV regain its importance in the living room.

In terms of the most widely used feature – video projection, both the hardware and software on HappyCast support all popular video streaming apps.

Projection via HiSilicon Hi-Air and QR code scanning

By leveraging 5 GHz WiFi technology, HappyCast allows you to watch projected content in literally the blink of an eye.

Dragging the progress bar on the phone controls playback on the TV, no different to how playback is controlled on the phone itself.

Third-party video streaming apps have also played a major role in enhancing the projection experience. However, on many smart TV systems, the projected video often restarts from the beginning once the progress bar is dragged in the app, and the picture quality is also compromised in comparison with the video source.

HappyCast ensures that the video quality on the projection screen is the same as that of the video source on the phone, at up to 4K 60 Hz. HappyCast also supports Bluetooth speakers, providing for cinema-level immersive audio and video from the convenience of the living room.

Playback speed control comes in handy as well: Lebo's remote control gives you the option of watching projected video at 2x speeds.

HappyCast has also innovated the projection experience by automatically playing the next episode.

In essence, using apps for projection involves the phone sharing a video URL with the TV for playback on the TV. Although playback on the TV can be controlled from the mobile video app, playback is isolated from the phone system. Phone notifications are not synced to the TV, the power-off status of the phone does not affect ongoing TV playback, and you can continue to perform other tasks on your phone during projection.

HappyCast supports screen mirroring, in addition to video projection. In screen mirroring mode, content displayed on the phone is mirrored on the TV screen, and you can navigate within mobile apps on the vast TV display, even playing games on the TV screen. Thanks to the high-performance processor and multi-core 2D/3D acceleration engine, input lag can be as low as 40 ms, which is almost imperceptible to the naked eye.

As an increasing number of classic PC games have been made available on smartphones, screen mirroring allows you to experience your favorite games on an immersive screen, with the benefit of a Bluetooth game controller.

Better yet, you can also directly play AAA games on the TV by projecting a cloud game app, saving you the cost and hassle of purchasing a Nvidia RTX 3090 and PlayStation 5 console.

Screen mirroring doesn't even require devices to be connected to the same WiFi network, which makes it ideal when you're helping a friend in another location with projection.

Better projection services will accelerate cross-screen collaboration and the pooling of resources among smart devices. HiSilicon and Lebo are proud to have played their part in helping make projection as easy, effective, and immersive as possible.
