Intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) represent the combination of V2X technologies and intelligent vehicles. They are equipped with advanced sensors, controllers, and executors, and support high-speed and low-latency communication technologies such as 5G. Deeply integrated into the intelligent transportation system, ICVs can exchange and share information with pedestrians, other vehicles, and the road infrastructure, achieving safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient travel. ICVs are smart mobile spaces that integrate home, entertainment, work, and social interactions, while also providing key network security nodes in an intelligent transportation system and important big data sources in an intelligent society.
ICVs can be enabled by C-V2X, for which 5G and V2X are two vital technologies. 5G enables intelligent vehicles to connect to the public Internet with Gbit/s-level bandwidth and low latency, which is the basis for applications such as IVI, HD video backhaul, and high-precision maps. Meanwhile, V2X incorporates V2N (Vehicle-to-Network), V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle), V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure), and V2P (Vehicle-to-Pedestrian), and provides fast and reliable communication between intelligent vehicles and the intelligent transportation system. V2X is capable of reliably sending messages, achieving an average latency of 15 ms even in congested traffic. It allows intelligent vehicles to obtain information related to road conditions and traffic participants in real time, and helps prevent traffic accidents by predicting scenarios, making traveling safer, convenient, and more efficient.
